Open Letter
to My Congressman - Bobby Scott
Wed, Nov 22, 2000
From: Archie R.
Whitehill, Your Constituent
To:
The Honorable Bobby Scott, Member of Congress
Subj: Congratulations on your re-election, Mr. Scott.
In the past I have been dubious of your support of basic citizen rights in your
virtually unquestioned support of the Clinton administration. This frightens me,
sir.
Specific items I would like you to consider:
1. The Presidency is undermining your responsibilities as a Congressman by
writing so many Executive Orders. Please do something to minimize such
legislative actions by the President.
2. The current administration is whittling away our Bill of Rights mandated
right to keep and bear arms. Your support in this travesty has been deplorable.
Let's shift the fight on violence to those who are actually violent, criminals.
I would like to see you support a national "Project Exile" such as we
have in Virginia. Have you reviewed the NRA's "Eddy Eagle" program for
children? I'd like to see your support of that program throughout the nation.
Knowledge is the basis of safety.
3. In case you haven't guessed, I am a closet Libertarian, and would like to see
much less federal involvement in state and local affairs.
4. Although I am not particularly fond of Mr. Bush (or of Mr. Gore, for that
matter), I do like his idea of returning a large portion of the surplus to the
citizens, no strings attached. I am not rich, but do not feel it is (yet)
criminal to be wealthy.
5. I also support the idea of changing the Social Security system in two basic
ways. First, allow a portion of an individual's Social Security Contribution be
invested privately into mutual funds or other private vehicles of investment.
Second, use Mr. Gore's “lockbox” so that Congress and the Executive Branch
must keep their hands completely off funds added to the Social Security account
by employers and employees.
This is a start, Mr. Scott. I look forward to keeping you apprised of my
opinions and ideas, and hope to hear, read and evaluate those of yours.
Very Respectfully,
Archie R. Whitehill
