Message to Armed Robbers . . .
Sun, Dec 24, 2000

Another apparent non-producer hit the pavement, dead, yesterday. And I rejoice.

All the facts aren't in yet, but from the facts in the paper and on television this morning, it seems an armed robber tried holding up an ABC store in Portsmouth last night. Fortunately, one of the customers was armed and was able to shoot and kill the would-be felon.

The customer was armed and held a valid concealed weapons permit. He not only stopped a robbery, but also very likely was able to prevent the shooting of an innocent shopkeeper or other customer through his decisive action. My commendations to this as yet unnamed customer.

I encourage other law-abiding citizens to get their concealed weapons carry permits. Learn to be safe with a gun; learn to shoot accurately; learn when you may or may not use lethal force. Then you, too, may save a life someday, and it may well be your own.

This particular shopping area in Portsmouth has recently experienced several armed robberies. With resolutions like the one last night with the perpetrator dead and cold in a horizontal position, perhaps others will think twice -- or also die.

The dead man was 18, young to die, but there's certainly no sorrow for him from this writer. The sorrow goes to his family who will suffer more than he did, and who likely had suffered from his behavior prior to his death. The sorrow goes to the perpetrator's victims, last night and possibly others at other times who were inconvenienced and terrified by this young hood. I will certainly not miss his life.

It is a fitting gift to society that such a boy be taken from the streets, never to rob, kill, or harass again.

My commendations to the shooter.

Should other facts be made known to me, I'll post them as addendums. Meanwhile, armed robbers take note: Crime often carries the ultimate price. Be ready to pay it.
