Let me confess I ate at D.C. Chase's with trepidation. There have been several restaurants in the same location, none really stellar, a couple mere gimmicks. A friend who had tried D.C. Chase's raved about it, so I decided to give it a try. My friend is now a very good friend as a result of that recommendation.

Having had an appointment cancellation, I decided to treat myself to a nicer than usual lunch and to try a new place and stopped in for what I thought would be another mediocre lunch. Was I surprised! The décor was not quite antique, not quite formal and quite comfortable to the eye. Fascinating front-pages from historic Virginian-Pilot and other local papers throughout the years decorated the walls. A few brought back memories, a few were before my time.

The menu arrived promptly as did my server's request for my drink order. The menu was varied and included both a luncheon menu with items from $5 to $7, as well as a menu with entrées from $10 to $14. I opted for a $14 flank steak stuffed with spinach and mushrooms. As sides, I chose waffle fries and broccoli. A salad was included with the meal.

The salad arrived and was a generous, fresh mixture of different greens and topped with cheeses and toasted walnuts, tossed with balsamic vinaigrette. One word, "delicious."

Now for those of you who have had flank steak know it can be tough if not properly prepared. Well, this flank steak was flavorful, thinly sliced to add tenderness. The servings were generous, and let me tell you the broccoli was cooked just right, fresh broccoli steamed to perfection.

The menu included many other items I look forward to sampling on return visits, items such as paella, tuna, pork tenderloin and other seafood items.

The luncheon menu, ranging from $5 to $7 included smaller portions of the dinner menu, as well as burgers, salads and specialty sandwiches. Rumor has it that the luncheon-priced menu items are generous, and no matter what you order, you won't leave D.C. Chase's hungry.

Although I had lunch alone, I kept thinking what a great place this would be to take my wife for dinner, and I intend to do that very soon.

My server was efficient and attentive, keeping my tea and water glasses filled, checking occasionally to make sure all was well. She offered to show me a dessert menu, but there was no way, so I declined. Maybe next time.

Major credit cards are accepted.
