Mi Hogar
has recently relocated from Hampton Boulevard, near ODU, to Granby Street. Their
food, always authentic, tasty and meticulously prepared to give you a literal
taste of Mexico, has remained as good as it always was, as good as you can get
outside Mexico.
For dinner last night, it was a difficult choice. This reviewer was hungry,
having missed lunch, and couldn’t decide until the “Special Dinner” reached up
out of the menu and grabbed my eyes. Later, it was to grab my stomach and throw
it into ecstatic joy with tastefully prepared combinations of taste, texture and
spices.
But, before dinner arrived, we were treated to toasty warm nacho chips served
with your choice of red salsa or a white sauce. Our choice was to try both the
white and the red dips. Both were freshly made at the restaurant; nothing out of
a can, believe me. In fact, we had to wait a few minutes for the white dip until
they had finished making that evening’s batch. We went through two batches of
sauce and two baskets of nachos. Not that they were stingy in amount, but
because we were both really hungry and it was soooo goood!
My Goddess had a taco, a burrito and a chalupa, which she deemed excellent. With
the leftover nacho dip, she added to the sauce provided by the kitchen.
My “special dinner” came on two plates! The special dinner consisted of a
burrito, a chalupa, chili relleno, a beef taco, an enchilada, rice and beans.
Whew. … That was some meal, and everything was delicious. The food’ spiciness
was the kind that leaves a fantastic tingly taste treat on your tongue without
burning your tongue and throat. The guacamole and cheese mixed well with the
tomatoey sauces and the beef. The enchilada was a chicken enchilada while the
other items contained beef.
The waitress, who was Hispanic, as were all the staff we could see, was very
pleasant, helpful and informative as we ordered and asked about the various
dishes. Her service was also attentive and friendly; we felt like honored guests
rather than just customers.
Additional dishes consisted of soups, their albondigas (meatball) soup is
delicious, as are their fajitas, both of which I have eaten on previous visits
to Mi Hogar. The Mi Hogar menu is a bit of Mexico’s culinary history, right here
in Hampton Roads. Prices are reasonable with my meal only $8.75 and my Goddess’
meal only $6.25. With our meals, soft drinks, tax and tip, we got out of Mi
Hogar fully satisfied with a great tasting authentic Mexican meal, and nowhere
near hungry anymore, for just a hair over $20. Now that’s a deal all the way
around, ¿Si?
