It was a Sunday evening and four of us were going to have a grand dinner at Jewish Mother in Portsmouth. Well, guess what? Jewish Mother's Portsmouth location is now J Moms! Yes, there is still a Jewish Mother near the oceanfront in Virginia Beach, and you'll see a review of that later. But now, on to J Moms.

The menu is entirely different, not so much deli stuff and a bit more 'yuppie' stuff, which I like, too.

Our table was near the waterfront window, which gave us a great view of Norfolk across the Elizabeth River, and we could watch the ferry dock and leave every fifteen minutes or so while we chatted and ate our dinners.

Cleriece had a rack of beef ribs, which were a bit disappointing. There was not much meat on the bones, and what meat there was was greasy and a bit over-cooked, as well as too salty for my taste. Of course, nothing beats port ribs, if you're going to have ribs, so let that be a warning.

On the other hand, the Jamaican steak I ordered was perfectly prepared, and seasoned with exotic Jamaican seasoning. It was juicy, tender and it tasted oh so good! The garlic mashed potatoes, which came with both the ribs and the steak, were delicious also, as were the sautéed vegetables, which seemed fresh and were not over cooked.

One of our guests, a vegetarian, ordered pasta primavera, which she said was very good. The serving was generous and my friend said the meal was enjoyable. She had a chance to enjoy it the following day, too, when she ate the leftovers.

Another friend ordered baked herb chicken, which was tasty, but there was not much meat on the bones, even though it seemed to be a half chicken. He, too, really liked the garlic potatoes just like Cleriece and I did. It would have been nice to have another dollop of those potatoes on each of our plates!

I almost ordered the meat loaf, for which I have a weakness, but the Jamaican steak sounded so interesting I had it instead. There were no regrets there, but I do hope to try their meatloaf on a subsequent visit.

The desert selection seemed to be mostly chocolate infused items, pretty much the same as Jewish Mother used to have, but we declined desert this particular time.

All in all, the meal was enjoyable, with the exception of the ribs, and I would recommend J Moms to you for a decent dinner.
